Dorian Awards: ‘Call Me by Your Name’ Hailed as Film of the Year
GALECA, the Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics, gave its top acting prizes to Timothee Chalamet and Sally Hawkins.
THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER – Call Me by Your Name has been named film of the year by GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics, which is comprised of more than 200 gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and entertainment journalists in the U.S., Canada and the U.K., which announced its Dorian Award winners on Wednesday. The film also earned Timothee Chalamet a Dorian Award as Film Performance of the Year – Actor and as Rising Star. Sally Hawkins was awarded the comparable best actress prize for The Shape of Water.
Lady Bird’s Greta Gerwig was named Director of the Year.
Jordan Peele earned Screenplay of the Year for Get Out. Peele was also crowned Wilde Artist of the Year and Wilde Wit of the Year. He shares the latter award with Saturday Night Live’s Kate McKinnon.
Meryl Streep was crowned the group’s latest choice for Timeless Star, a career achievement honor.
“Who doesn’t love Meryl Streep outside of non-feminist Donald Trump?” said Diane Anderson-Minshall, GALECA’s president as well as editorial director of The Advocate magazine. “Streep’s latest film, The Post, speaks to her commitment to playing, and supporting, strong women who push for or at least embody the need for equality.”
Added John Griffiths, GALECA’s executive director, “From Sophie’s Choice to Postcards From the Edge, Streep’s an incredibly stirring and affecting actress who transports, delights and nails various accents like no other. I’d say she definitely qualifies as a timeless star — and amid all the headlines about sexual harassment in Hollywood, she’s also a very relevant current voice.”
God’s Own Country — another love story involving two gay men — won as GALECA’s Unsung Film of the Year. The Shape of Water was recognized as Visually Striking Film of the Year. And mother!, Darren Aronofsky’s psychological chiller starring Jennifer Lawrence, was hailed as Campy Flick of the Year.
Among TV categories, HBO’s Big Little Lies took TV Drama of the Year, and Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel was named TV Comedy of the Year.
A number of the recipients will join the group for GALECA’s annual Winners Toast on Feb. 24 in Beverly Hills. A complete list of winners follows.
